About 36 railway projects coming up in the region; International Railway Academy to provide state-of-the-art training.

About 80,000 railway staff will be needed within five years in the GCC for 36 railway projects that are currently ongoing, under construction or in the planning stage in the region.

International Railway Academy in Saudi Arabia will provide state-of-the-art training platform to several thousand professionals and technical staff who will be joining an expanding rail network in the region, according to an official from the Academy.
Speaking to Bollyfriends, an official from the International Academy for Railway and Advanced Developments, Saudi Company for Railway Services, said it will provide specialised training for school graduates and professionals in the proposed academy, which will be first-of-its-kind in the region.

“There are 36 major railway projects and Metro railway projects including those that are progressing or under planning stage in the Middle East, with Al Etihad Railway network planned to link all the GCC nations, “ said the official, who added that the Academy is negotiating with the Etihad Railway to provide training facility for the potential Emirati staff.

Similarly, the academy will be providing special training packages to Saudi students, who pass out of schools and colleges, for potential placement in the expanding railway network in the GCC.

The official said Saudi Arabia and the UAE will share major chunk of the GCC railway network. In the UAE, Etihad railway will cover 1200km, several railway stations and offices.

Etihad Railway is already recruiting staff through its official website.

“Dubai Metro employs nearly 300 employees and some of the GCC railway projects are going to be smaller than Dubai Metro. We expect that about 80,000 railway staff will be required in the region for the next five years,” the official said.

Technicians and experts will be needed for maintaining and supervising the signaling systems.

The Railway Academy, planned along the Riyadh-Dammam railway network, is specially designed as a landmark building with two floors and each of the 14 classrooms will accommodate 15 students each, said Maher Al Refael, Academy’s Project Manager.

In addition to learning in classrooms, trainees will have access to in-house practical training in the four workshops that the academy is developing.

These four workshops will be dedicated to real-life training on railway signaling, heavy track maintenance machines, hand held track maintenance equipment and a simulator center for train driving.

The academy will have two levels of training for high school students and specialized training for professionals.  A student who completes the course of one-and-a-half years will be able to do basic maintenance work on railway tracks. High school students who undergo a two-and-a-half years course will be able to perform fault finding on tracks.

Courses offered will range from short-term to diplomas of 2.5 years; training certification programme of 1.5 years; training courses for six months; as well as special courses designed according to the client requirements.

The Academy is also planning to deliver virtual training programmes.

Rents jump 2.12% in January, villa prices decline marginally: Reidin

Rents continue to soar in Dubai month after month since 2013.

Reidin.com data released on Thursday revealed that rents for residential properties rose by 2.12 per cent month-on-month (m-o-m) in January 2014 with rental prices increasing 20.32 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y).

Apartment rents jumped 2.35 per cent m-o-m and 22.56 per cent y-o-y, while villa rentals went up by 1.02 per cent m-o-m and 10.82 per cent y-o-y.

Though in its Q4 2013 report, Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL), a global property consultancy, had predicted that 28,000 new units will be released in 2014, it said in February that realistically it expected only 20,000 new units to enter the market this year.

Property prices, especially the apartment segment, remained on the growth trajectory. Property sales index increased by 2.55 per cent m-o-m, while prices soared 26.79 per cent y-o-y.

On the apartment front, prices went up by 3.33 per cent m-o-m and 29.70 per cent y-o-y. However, villa prices registered a decrease on a m-o-m basis in January. It fell by 0.40 per cent m-o-m, but still reflected an increase of 16.38 per cent y-o-y.

In February, Craig Plumb, Head of Research, JLL Mena, said: "There has been concern that Dubai will experience another bubble, but there are many differences this time around that makes for a ‘smarter’ market.

"Some of these differences are that investors are more cautious, regulations are better, developers are less reliant on pre-sales and significant levels of new supply. Though rise in residential property prices was ‘irrational’ in 2013, the rate of increase will slow-down this year. But there won't be any correction this year," he added.

An estimated 200,000 jobs will be created in the UAE in the next 5 years: experts.

Over the next five years, an estimated 200,000 jobs will be created in the UAE, according to experts, who have predicted that the country will return to its “glory days” of pre-2008, thanks to Dubai’s successful Expo 2020 bid.

In an effort to steer young professionals and students towards the thousands of jobs that will be created, UAE Global Management Challenge, which kicks off for the first time in the UAE, will encourage and stimulate entrants to gain practical experience through an innovative competition.

The Challenge consists of a management simulation in which teams of three to five people, comprising university students and corporates, are given complete control of a virtual company with the objective of obtaining the highest investment performance for its shareholders.

Competitors analyse financial and economic indicators, expand their views on corporate strategy, interact with functional areas of a company and gain an in-depth understanding of the market conditions in which their companies compete.

“The UAE has a wealth of talent and through the UAE Global Management Challenge young managers and university students can hone their skills and find out what they want to do over the next few years,” said Mian Muneer Uddin, managing partner of Beaufort Associates, the consulting and advisory services firm that brought the Global Management Challenge to the UAE.

“The Expo 2020 will bring in a wide variety of jobs and students and professionals will be able to use the competition as a platform to target the right occupation in the run up to the Expo.”
The Expo, which will run for six months, will bring in a variety of jobs including those in finance, real estate, retail hospitality and other services. In an effort to encourage students and professionals to gain solid practical experience and become an attractive employee, the competition challenges young entrepreneurs to take over the reins of a virtual company.
Those who enter the competition will have the chance to experience the private sector, while gaining insight and expertise into strategy and management, so they can better make a career choice.
“Not only does this competition contribute to developing the next generation of business leaders but it will also increase job opportunities for those living in the UAE,” added Muneer.

The challenge was officially launched in September of 2013 and encourages professionals and students to participate. The winning team, or ‘UAE Champion’, will compete with counterparts from several countries for the world title, to be held in Sochi, Russia, in April 2014.

Major changes to the visa fee structure of the UK have been proposed.

With all likelihood, prices of visas and visa-related services to the UK are going to change within month from now. Although some reductions are in the planning, the changes mostly include fee increases.

The proposal to change the fee structure was announced by the UK government this week, and if approved by Parliament the new fees will apply from 6 April 2014, while some fees for premium services overseas will apply from 31 March 2014.

In general, UK visa fees would be hiked by 4 per cent. This includes the fee for a short-term visa to the UK, noted the UK Border Agency (UKBA).

Currently, a short-term visit visa to the UK costs Dh500. A 4 per cent increase would mean a Dh520 charge. A longer term visa which allows a stay of up to 2 years now costs Dh1737, this would become Dh1806.

Further, a couple of new fees would be introduced for services that were previously free-of-charge. A fee of GBP428 (Dh2564) would be charged for applicants to the Tier 2 programme under the banner of a ‘Tier 2 shortage occupations fee’. This fee would be applied to both overseas and local applicants.

A new 5 year Tier 2 general/ICT application fee would be charged, and the discount for nationals of countries that have ratified the 1961 European Social Charter would be eliminated, to become a flat rate of GBP55 (Dh330).

Meanwhile, fee reductions of two kinds have been proposed. The sponsorship fees for Tier 2 large sponsor licenses and sponsor action plans would be reduced, and a number of other sponsorship fees frozen. The direct airside transit visa would be reduced to GBP40 (Dh240).

“The increases will allow us to improve our customer service, and enable us to begin offering optional premium services,” stated the UKBA on its website.

New premium services that have been proposed include a number of services enabling a fast-track visa application. These services would be provided on three levels of priority.

While a 3-5 day priority visa service would be provided at a cost of GBP100 (Dh599), a priority settlement application service would be available for GBP300 (Dh1797), and super priority visa service for GBP600 (Dh3595), the latter expediting the application process to the shortest period possible.

Furthermore, appointments outside of office hours would be made available for a charge of GBP50 (Dh300) and a passport passback service at more locations for GBP40 (Dh240) per applicant.
