  • A Mumbai based publication Mid-Day hosted a grand party on February 26 to celebrate the re-launch of the newspaper and invited a bevy of Bollywood stars.

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan led the Bollywood frat pack and tweeted later in the evening: Too much happiness & graciousness at the Midday party. Good people make you feel good. Thank u all. And Ali Zafar ur ‘har soo' song rocks.
The reluctant party-goer Aamir Khan made an exception for Mid-Day, dressed casually and all smiles.
The ever-energetic Amitabh Bachchan also was present at the party along with his son Abhishek Bachchan.
Deepika Padukone, the current It Girl of Bollywood, looked pretty in an Ashish Soni dress.
Her accessories were in contrast colour combination and the bright dash of pink on her lips speaks volumes about her style confidence.
The leggy lass added altitude with her golden heels.
Sonam Kapoor looked every bit of the fashionista that she is in an Ilk dress. She arrived with her Bewakoofiyan co-star Ayushmann Khurrana.
Ranveer Singh finally decided to go casual with denim and jacket after his experimental streaks on every Bollywood event (if only he could take care of his shoes).

Kangana Ranaut rocked in her princess look. The short flared TopShop striped dress which she wore to the Mid-day bash was a little above her knees making heads turn as all eyes were on her toned legs.
The TopShop striped black and pink dress also saw a black bow wrapped around her waist

Despite Saket's movie being a one-sided affair, it's enjoyable nevertheless and is packed with some genuine laughs

Chances are you would be in a constant state of déjà vu if you are married, or have a child, or are planning a second, or are a man!

Yes, ‘Shaadi Ke Side/Effects’ is purely a one-sided affair.

The struggles. The shortcomings.  The adjustments.  The chaos. The constant bickering.

Almost every tussle is panned out from a male perspective. Leaving very little space or scope to delve into the woman’s psyche.

A few insights are thrown in at the fag end through quick lines, at a time when tears and emotions are played out in full measure.

Director Saket Chowdhary takes the story forward from the 2006 rom-com ‘Pyaar ke Side Effects’, exploring the supposed aftermath of when two lives get united in matrimony.

Only, his married couple – Trisha and Sid – don’t show any real jitters and have successfully nailed the ‘happily ever after’ bit.

They sneak out of their mundane lives occasionally to live out a fantasy, which they believe is key to spicing things up in their marriage.

And that’s not all. Sid even spills the beans to a puzzled hotel manager  who mistakes them for a naughty twosome heady in love.

“When I make a mistake, I say sorry. And, when my wife makes a mistake, I say sorry,” he broadcasts proudly, hinting at their secret of marital bliss.

The hiccups in this otherwise fairy tale, however, creep in when Trisha and Sid turn parents unexpectedly.

The diaper changes, the late-nights and the feedings play spoilsport in their romance.

Cracks appear almost instantly when Sid’s freedom is curtailed and his parties and male buddies are locked away.

Trisha, on the other hand, embraces motherhood wholeheartedly and is baffled at Sid’s immaturity and lack of earnestness.

As an unprepared Sid fumbles and falters in attempting to become the “best papa in the world” and adopts an unconventional life to nail the “best marriage strategy”, we are left wondering if this should have been titled “the side effects of being a daddy” instead.

Despite the obvious disregard of the female point of view, we must confess that Saket’s story has some incredible situations that had us cracking, even when some of them were already unveiled in the trailers.

Sid’s quirky journey as he attempts to understand and empathise with his pregnant wife is a laugh riot. Especially, when he leaves a pizza delivery boy absolutely stunned. It had to be Farhan Akhtar to crack it.
He brings genuineness and amiability to an otherwise self-centered and often confused Sid who earns for his timeout. You empathise with him as he struggles to tune mindless TV ad jingles to ensure his family is taken care of  and hopes that one day financial independence would mean a life of a true musician.

Vidya Balan matches up, despite being given a nagging part. Although she manages to salvage this oversight towards the end, her methods might appear unjustified and shocking to some.

That aside, she’s earnest and it’s empowering to see an actress flesh out real women without succumbing to the pencil-thin image that Bollywood often frames.

Writer Arshad Sayed pens some genuinely fun lines, with Sid walking away with the better ones.  “I feel like Sehwag... Dropped after a few bad performances, for someone much younger and enthusiastic,” he mocks when a younger neighbour turns Trisha’s new buddy.

The supporting cast of Ram Kapoor, Vir Das, Rati Agnihotri, Illa Arun and Purab Kohli are fairly non-interfering, with some getting a little more screen time and importance than the rest.

Despite the brilliant performances and some incredibly funny situations, Saket’s narrative slumps innumerable times over the two-hour-and-twenty-five-minutes screen time.

But if you have time to spare, then ‘Shaadi Ke Side Effects’ is a fairly enjoyable ride. Only, don’t go looking for any marriage counseling here because you are not going to find it.

About 36 railway projects coming up in the region; International Railway Academy to provide state-of-the-art training.

About 80,000 railway staff will be needed within five years in the GCC for 36 railway projects that are currently ongoing, under construction or in the planning stage in the region.

International Railway Academy in Saudi Arabia will provide state-of-the-art training platform to several thousand professionals and technical staff who will be joining an expanding rail network in the region, according to an official from the Academy.
Speaking to Bollyfriends, an official from the International Academy for Railway and Advanced Developments, Saudi Company for Railway Services, said it will provide specialised training for school graduates and professionals in the proposed academy, which will be first-of-its-kind in the region.

“There are 36 major railway projects and Metro railway projects including those that are progressing or under planning stage in the Middle East, with Al Etihad Railway network planned to link all the GCC nations, “ said the official, who added that the Academy is negotiating with the Etihad Railway to provide training facility for the potential Emirati staff.

Similarly, the academy will be providing special training packages to Saudi students, who pass out of schools and colleges, for potential placement in the expanding railway network in the GCC.

The official said Saudi Arabia and the UAE will share major chunk of the GCC railway network. In the UAE, Etihad railway will cover 1200km, several railway stations and offices.

Etihad Railway is already recruiting staff through its official website.

“Dubai Metro employs nearly 300 employees and some of the GCC railway projects are going to be smaller than Dubai Metro. We expect that about 80,000 railway staff will be required in the region for the next five years,” the official said.

Technicians and experts will be needed for maintaining and supervising the signaling systems.

The Railway Academy, planned along the Riyadh-Dammam railway network, is specially designed as a landmark building with two floors and each of the 14 classrooms will accommodate 15 students each, said Maher Al Refael, Academy’s Project Manager.

In addition to learning in classrooms, trainees will have access to in-house practical training in the four workshops that the academy is developing.

These four workshops will be dedicated to real-life training on railway signaling, heavy track maintenance machines, hand held track maintenance equipment and a simulator center for train driving.

The academy will have two levels of training for high school students and specialized training for professionals.  A student who completes the course of one-and-a-half years will be able to do basic maintenance work on railway tracks. High school students who undergo a two-and-a-half years course will be able to perform fault finding on tracks.

Courses offered will range from short-term to diplomas of 2.5 years; training certification programme of 1.5 years; training courses for six months; as well as special courses designed according to the client requirements.

The Academy is also planning to deliver virtual training programmes.

Rents jump 2.12% in January, villa prices decline marginally: Reidin

Rents continue to soar in Dubai month after month since 2013.

Reidin.com data released on Thursday revealed that rents for residential properties rose by 2.12 per cent month-on-month (m-o-m) in January 2014 with rental prices increasing 20.32 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y).

Apartment rents jumped 2.35 per cent m-o-m and 22.56 per cent y-o-y, while villa rentals went up by 1.02 per cent m-o-m and 10.82 per cent y-o-y.

Though in its Q4 2013 report, Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL), a global property consultancy, had predicted that 28,000 new units will be released in 2014, it said in February that realistically it expected only 20,000 new units to enter the market this year.

Property prices, especially the apartment segment, remained on the growth trajectory. Property sales index increased by 2.55 per cent m-o-m, while prices soared 26.79 per cent y-o-y.

On the apartment front, prices went up by 3.33 per cent m-o-m and 29.70 per cent y-o-y. However, villa prices registered a decrease on a m-o-m basis in January. It fell by 0.40 per cent m-o-m, but still reflected an increase of 16.38 per cent y-o-y.

In February, Craig Plumb, Head of Research, JLL Mena, said: "There has been concern that Dubai will experience another bubble, but there are many differences this time around that makes for a ‘smarter’ market.

"Some of these differences are that investors are more cautious, regulations are better, developers are less reliant on pre-sales and significant levels of new supply. Though rise in residential property prices was ‘irrational’ in 2013, the rate of increase will slow-down this year. But there won't be any correction this year," he added.

After almost four years, a ray of hope arrived from the same country as Sri Lanka hinted to tour Pakistan again if adequate security arrangements are guaranteed to them. “Insurgency is not new to us as we have seen it in Sri Lanka for three decades. The 2009 incident was unfortunate, but Sri Lanka can tour Pakistan again if decent security arrangements are guaranteed”, said Sri Lanka Cricket’s media manager Rajith Fernando.

““Sri Lanka highly values the support from Pakistan in tough times. We understand Pakistan’s agony and ready to help in every possible way”, added Rajith Fernando
On a question, Fernando did not rule out the possibility of a formal discussion, on the matter, between the officials of the PCB and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) in the near future.

The interim chairman of the PCB, Najam Sethi and the Secretary of SLC, Nishantha Ranatunga are in the UAE to witness the ongoing series between Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

The SLC spokesman also touched upon the upcoming tour to Bangladesh and hoped it would happen as per scheduled. “We have not decided to call the tour off as yet but the final decision will be taken after thorough deliberation. We hope situation will get better after the general elections in Bangladesh”, said Rajith Fernando

Bangladesh is scheduled to host Sri Lanka for two Tests, two Twenty20s and three ODIs during a series starting from January 27.
