Protein power.


While carbohydrates are an important source of fuel, proteins are essential when it comes to maintaining those muscles. The body relies on protein to build and maintain muscle mass, and protein can be especially beneficial when consumed before an exercise session. 'Protein is the building block of your body,' explains personal trainer Ricardo Macedo, 'When consumed before exercise, a protein shake will help preserve lean tissue (muscle) by decreasing exercise-induced catabolism (muscle breakdown) whilst also providing a small amount of energy.
